Fractal Dimension Calculation for CORINE Land-Cover Evaluation in GIS - A Case Study

چکیده
Together with rapid development in GI science recent decades, the fractal geometry represents a powerful tool for various geographic analyses and studies. This study points the land-cover areas with extreme values of fractal dimension in Olomouc region. This leads, together with consequent statistical analyses, to result that according to fractal dimension it is possible to distinguish (or at least to assume) the origin of areas. General fractal calculation method is used in the case study. Statistical methods are also applied to test mean values of land-cover areas fractal dimension (Student’s t-test and analysis of variance). Using non-integer, fractal dimension, one can analyze complexity of the shape, explore underlying geographic processes and analyze various geographic phenomena in a new and innovative way.

Are Shape Metrics Useful for a Geocomputation? CORINE Land-Cover Analysis Case Study
Since shape metrics emerged in the landscape ecology as a new tool for quantitative evaluation of a landscape, it has become easier for geocomputation methods in GIS to adopt theirs principles. Nevertheless, there are still different scientific opinions about the usefulness of shape metrics. The paper describes shape metrics application for Corine Land Cover 1990, 2000 and 2006 areas (CLC) anal...

The sensitivity of landscape metrics to the scale effect is one of the most challenging issues in landscape ecology and quantification of land use spatial patterns. In this study, fractal dimension was employed to assess the effect of scale on the sensitivity of landscape metric in the north of Iran (around Sari) as the case study. Land use/ cover maps were derived from Landsat-8 (OLI sensor) i...

Every phenomena in the nature, despite the complexity of the subject, has certain rules and regulations. River pattern and behavior as one of the most complex natural phenomena to this is not an exception. Depending on geomorphologic, climatic, topographic and erosive conditions, the waterways exhibit different patterns and behaviors. One of the parameters which can be achieved using the comple...
متن کاملEstimate of Peatland Distribution in Estonia Using an Integrated GIS/RS Approach
Determination of the spatial extent of peatland is important for the evaluation of soil carbon stocks. At European Level there is a need to provide accurate and updated estimate of the distribution of peatland. Comparison of national data with EU wide land cover mapping shows that there is limited compatibility between the different data sets. The aim of the present study is to test a methodolo...

Soil erosion is considered as one of the most significant indices of land degradation, which once evaluated, a wide gamut of changes in the environment could be evaluated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of soil erosion by the application of the CORINE model, as a suitable means of soil erosion assessment, in the semi-arid western areas of Golestan province. In this study, soil, ...
